Sriharikota, September 3, 2026: The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) is preparing for the launch of its EOS-05 Earth observation satellite aboard the GSLV-F17 rocket. The mission is scheduled for September 4, 2026, at 2:55 AM IST from the Second Launch Pad at the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota, Andhra Pradesh.
The mission is attracting significant attention because EOS-05 will become India’s first imaging satellite designed to operate from a geosynchronous orbit. From its high-altitude position, the satellite will be able to repeatedly observe large areas of the Earth.
What Is EOS-05?
EOS-05 is an advanced Earth observation spacecraft developed for applications that require detailed and repeated observation of the Earth’s surface.
Unlike conventional Earth-observation satellites that move across different parts of the planet, a satellite operating from a geosynchronous orbit can remain synchronized with Earth’s rotation. This allows it to maintain frequent observations of a particular region.
The capability could be useful for monitoring weather patterns, natural disasters, environmental changes and other large-scale developments.
GSLV-F17 Mission
The satellite will be carried into space by GSLV-F17, the 19th flight of India’s Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle.
According to ISRO, the rocket will initially place EOS-05 into a Sub-Geosynchronous Transfer Orbit (Sub-GTO). The launch will take place from the Second Launch Pad at the Satish Dhawan Space Centre.
The mission is also significant because it represents ISRO’s return to launches after a months-long gap following its previous launch attempt earlier this year.

EOS-05 is expected to strengthen India’s Earth-observation capabilities. Frequent imaging from a geosynchronous orbit could provide useful information for disaster management, weather observation and environmental monitoring.
